CASE SYNOPSIS

The easy availability of raw materials and low – cost labour for manufacturing clothing materials, makes Pakistan a market of great concern for many international brand owners. PUMA being one of the leading companies worldwide in clothing and apparel, was a victim of the same issue.

CASE DETAILS

The manufacturing (stitching unit) of PUMA was identified in Pakistan. The target was manufacturing counterfeit PUMA along and reselling them to wholesalers, retailers and other individual sellers. The counterfeit products replicated the design, logo, patterns, etc. of the original brand. The following activities were monitored as a part of the target’s business activities:

1- Purchase of Raw Materials
2- Stitching of Counterfeit products in bulk quantities
3- Printing and Attaching of Logos (of the genuine brand)
4- Printing of different types Labels and Tags
5- Packing for sale and distribution purposes
6- Sale of Counterfeit products to local distributors, retailers and wholesalers

The target identified was involved in manufacturing of more than a single brand’s products, all counterfeits of big brands. These products are low quality and low-priced products that are produced in large quantities, impacting the entire market.

Once the target was confirmed, Checkers Raiding Team in coordination with Local Enforcement Agency (Police) conducted Anti – Counterfeit Enforcement Action. The raid was conducted against the target at the time production was still in process and stock was still within premises. All counterfeit products were confiscated, and destroyed.

Conducting regular Anti -Counterfeiting Raids is an important measure adopted by Brand Owners to reduce and eliminate the counterfeit products in the markets and put an end to them from the source.
